Starting yesterday, Microsoft is offering a pretty sweet deal to college students - a free Xbox 360. Of course, the free Xbox 360 comes with the purchase of a new Windows 7 PC, but it's still a pretty good deal. The crux of the matter is that Microsoft must have a ton of Xbox 360's laying around.
While summer is rapidly approaching, this might not be the best time to get a new PC, as school is going on break soon. But with a student email address (.edu) and proof of current enrollment, Microsoft is banking on students taking advantage of this now in order to get the free Xbox 360 for the summer. The interesting part is that it's not just through the Microsoft Store. Dell and HP are also participating retailers.
Personally, this is a great way for Microsoft to go about selling their PC's. First off, the student has to buy a PC that is greater than $700 to get the free Xbox. Then of course, you know the student is going to get an online subscription, then Netflix and so on, so the charges start adding up. Microsoft will make back any losses on the free Xbox's in no time, considering all the add-ons when buying a new PC. Not to mention, most of today's students aren't playing around with their own money, it's student loan money, or grants.
This is a keen business move for Microsoft, especially now that a lot of gamers are unhappy with Playstation. Giving away Xbox's, hopefully to kids who not only need a new PC, but are glaring angrily at their Sony Playstation consoles is a smart business move.
For all student deals from Microsoft, you can check out the Microsoft student center.
